Matching Grant Program

Improving children’s health in the Siouxland community is a big job! One of the goals of RMHC of Siouxland is to assist other Siouxland agencies with funding for programs that will improve children’s health. Through our Matching Grant Program, we are able to contribute funds from our local budget which are then matched with funds from RMHC Global.

RMHC of Siouxland began providing grants in 2001. During this nine years, RMHC has provided over $355,000 of funding support to improve children’s health!!

Matching Grant Guidelines and Form
Grant applications are reviewed on a semi-annual basis by a local committee of RMHC Board members and volunteers. Grants applications can be secured from the Ronald McDonald House, (712) 255-4084 and are due MARCH 1 or OCTOBER 1. Eligible agencies must be a 501©3 organization (schools also qualify) and serve children in the Siouxland area.

History of Grant Giving:

History

Improving children’s health in the Siouxland community is an ongoing goal of RMHC of Siouxland, Inc. With the help of our grant program, RMHC continues to assist other Siouxland agencies with funding for programs that will improve children’s health. RMHC dedicates local funds to assist which are then matched with funds from RMHC Global, doubling the impact we can make to kids!

RMHC of Siouxland began providing grants in 2001. During this nine years, RMHC has provided over $382,000 of funding support to improve children’s health!!

The giving continued in March, 2010, where the Matching Grant committee reviewed several requests for funding assistance and awarded $27,000 to six Siouxland agencies. The following programs were selected based on their contribution toward improving children’s health and increasing pediatric dental access and care:

  • Special Olympics - State Track meet expenses for 100 high school students
  • Big Splash Swimming - wheelchair lift for swimming pool
  • Plains Mental Health Clinic-Storm Lake - toys & supplies for pediatric patients
  • Middle School Athletic Program - Fall volleyball program equipment
  • Siouxland Dental Health - “Little Hearts, Little Smiles” dental serives for children
  • Orange City Hospital - newborn & pediatric furnishings

In October, 2009, the Matching Grant committee reviewed several requests for funding assistance and awarded over $38,000 to nine Siouxland agencies. The following programs were selected based on their contribution toward improving children’s health and increasing pediatric dental access and care:

  • $7500 - Siouxland Community Health (to purchase pediatric dental education resources)
  • $6000 - Siouxland Food Bank (Backpack program for hungry kids)
  • $2500 - Siouxland Youth Chorus (scholarships for students)
  • $2500 - Whiting Youth Foundation (funding for indoor batting cage)
  • $2500 - Lutheran Services of Iowa (emergency assistance funding)
  • $5000 - GiGi's Playhouse (reading/tutoring program)
  • $2000 - SWAK Child Care (relocation expenses for day care)
  • $2000 - Monona Cty Conservation (inschool Conservation program)
  • $3000 - Girls Inc. (indoor roller skates)
  • $5000 - CSADV (children’s toys & resources)

In March, 2009, the Matching Grant committee reviewed several requests for funding assistance. The following programs were selected based on their contribution toward improving children’s health and increasing pediatric dental access and care:

  • St. Luke’s Foundation - renovation of an exam room in the emergency area to make it inviting and kid-friendly
  • Onawa Community Foundation - resurfacing Gaukel Park ropes course
  • Middle School Athletics Program (SHIP) - equipment for football & volleyball
  • CSADV - updating the outdoor play area for children
  • Siouxland Dental Health - dental screens & follow-up procedures for kids
  • Wheelock & Bursick Dentistry - dental screens, sealants & services for
    children without a dental home

 

In March, 2008, the Matching Grant committee reviewed several requests for funding assistance. The following programs were selected based on their contribution toward reducing child obesity and improving pediatric dental access and care:

  • Onawa Community Foundation - construction of a new Skate Park
  • Whiting Community Fund - purchase of new toddler equipment for the Whiting City Park
  • Northside Activities Association - update of outdoor facilities
  • Siouxland Dental Health - provide dental screens & follow-up procedures
    for children
  • Siouxland Community Health Center - purchase of (2) intraoral cameras
  • Community Action Agency - funding dental kits & toothbrushes for Headstart classrooms

 

In October, 2008, the RMHC Matching Grant committee awarded funding for 4 grants:

  • Siouxland Food Bank - funding for backpack program for hungry elementary age children
  • Sioux City Boy’s Club - to purchase specialty playground equipment
  • Crittenton Center - purchase of new furniture for the teen shelter
  • Perry Creek Nursery School - purchase of new playground equipment

In addition, the committee approved a local grant to St. Luke’s Foundation to assist with the reconstruction of an emergency room to be children-friendly.

History

In March and October, 2007, a committee reviewed several grant requests and awarded 11 deserving organizations grants that will improve children’s health in the area. The awards were for the following:

  • Bedell Family YMCA, Spirit Lake, IA - assist in building a new Skate Park at the YMCA.
  • Goodwill Industries - purchase game tables and equipment for the newly expanded program space for their children’s Respite Program.
  • Community Action Agency of Siouxland - purchase of a SureSight Vision Screener for use in their early childhood education program.
  • BOYS & GIRLS HOME of NEBRASKA - purchase of a SureSight Vision screening device for Early Head Start and Head Start screenings.
  • Northside Activities Association - assist with the costs of the renovation of the outdoor activities facilities at Sioux City North High School.
  • Dr. Dona Prince & Dr. Mindy Stevens - funding to help with costs of a one-day event to provide dental services to 100 children from low-income families that have limited or no access to dental care and for follow-up services for 52 children that need fillings, extractions, sealants, etc.
  • Council on Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence - to replace toys for their resident children.
  • Siouxland Food Bank - to assist in the expansion of the Food Backpack program to 3 more Sioux City elementary schools.
  • June E. Nylen Cancer Center - funds will purchase reference cards for teens on the warning signs of breast and testicular cancer.
  • Mary Treglia Community House - assistance to replace carpet in the high traffic areas for children’s after school and summer programs.
  • SHIP/Middle School Activities Program - financial help to provide scholarships to middle school kids to participate in clinics, activities and sport programs.

Emphasis Program

Dental Emphasis

Access to dental care for children is a large problem in the Siouxland community. The RMHC of Siouxland recognizes this issue and we are actively searching for existing or new programs that we can help fund. If you are involved with a program or project that deals with pediatric dental care or education , please contact us! We have allocated dollars from our Local Grant Fund to help with dental care for children. Call the Ronald McDonald House at 255-4084 for more information. RMHC Scholarship Program

Scholarship

RMHC of Siouxland is once again offering scholarships to both high school graduates and Alumni Scholarships to previous RMCH scholarship winners!

Applications from high school seniors were due 2/15/10 and we have had a HUGE response with over 500 applications!! Once the applications are processed, a committee of Board members and community members will review the applications and select recipients based on their academic achievement, financial need, volunteer experience and personal statements and recommendations.

The Alumni Scholarships are due June 1, 2010, and applications are available at our website (www.ronaldhouse-siouxcity.com). We encourage all students who were awarded an RMHC scholarship for their first year of college to apply for funding for their 2nd, 3rd or ongoing years of undergraduate or post-graduate studies!

RMHC of Siouxland is proud to offer assistance to students to further their education.

Since 2003, the RMHC of Siouxland has awarded over 75 scholarships to high school seniors of $1000 each. With matching funds from Global RMHC, in 2003-2008, 75 scholarships have been awarded in all four RMHC programs: HACER (for students of Hispanic heritage), FUTURE ACHIEVERS (for students of African/American heritage), the ASIA/PACIFIC program (for students of Asian/Pacific heritage) and the NATIONAL RMHC program (for all students, regardless of heritage).

All high school seniors are eligible to apply for a scholarship provided they will be attending a certified higher learning institution the next Fall semester.
